"I Am SAM" March And Rally

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The people of Prichard gathered for one common goal: to stop crime.

The "I am Sam" march and rally, organized by State Representative Napoleon Bracy, aims to bring awareness to the unsolved murders in the city of Prichard. One victim is Sam Richardson. The popular minister and barber was robbed and beaten to death in his barbershop a couple weeks ago.

"Just letting people know that we are serious about our community and we are not going to let the madness continue. It stops right now," says Bracy.

Residents of the Prichard community marched about a mile. They started at the barbershop and ended at city hall, hoping to stir up a change.

One mother says her son was shot last month. He survived, but she is still looking for answers. "We are all victims, what can we do? We live here." says Lisa Stewart.

The march also aims to encourage people to come forward with information to the police and to help bring justice to family and friends.

"We are asking people that know to please say something to somebody, because we have to take care of each other," says Severia Morris, president of the United Concerned Citizens of Prichard.

Prichard Mayor Ron Davis says he is committed to helping the police department and hopes the rally ignites others to do the same. "We need to move beyond being scared and get out here and find out what's going on and do the right thing and get these people off the streets."

The SAM in "I am SAM" is an acronym which stands for senseless acts of murder and the remembrance of Sam Richardson. So far, the organizers have raised $2,500 for a reward to bring the person responsible to justice.
