Retired Dentist Dr. John Cunningham got a taste of the war before even joining the service. He watched as planes from Pensacola depth charged a German Submarine in Gulf of Mexico waters, while on a boat vacationing with his family.
Later, He served as a hospital corpsman on the USS Phoenix--the ship was engaged in many Pacific campaigns but weathered the war without so much as a scratch.
In fact, the Phoenix was the ship that transported Gen. MacArthur back to the Philippines. Cunningham says he never met the General, and didn't realize the historic significance of the event at the time.
