Foley Jewel Thief Arrested

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Thousands of dollars in antique jewelry is spread out on an evidence table in the Foley Police Department.

"Such a wonderful feeling because we have been in such a trauma all week about this," says Carolyne Hollis who got the call from Foley police. "I'm just so thankful that he has been caught and we get the merchandise back."

Police say Joshua Carter entered Hollis Furniture through a back entrance last week. He spent half an hour inside that store, was captured on video next door in Cahall's Deli and when he left he had cash from the register and about 50 thousand dollars worth of jewelry.

The Hollis' say they are thankful to get the majority of their merchandise back. Police say it was due to good old fashioned police work and a little luck.

"When the video came out we started canvassing area businesses and someone was able to give us a lead and after following up on the leads we located him last night a little after midnight." Detective Scott Baxley says as soon as they approached Carter he started telling them where the jewelry was. "He seemed to be relieved."

So is Carolyne Hollis. "Never have we had any kind of trouble. This was the first time."

Possibly the last. For the first time in 50 years of doing business, the store is being outfitted with a security system.

Carter is charged with two counts of burglary. More arrests are expected.
