Saraland Smoking Ban

City leaders hope the smoking ban will help the city's progressive image.

The city of Saraland is now the third city in Mobile County to go smoke free. Saraland city leaders approved a smoking ban earlier this summer. It goes into affect today, August 15th. The cities of Citronelle and Bayou La Batre also have bans.

No one can smoke in restaurants, bars and enclosed businesses. Smokers must also be fifteen away from playgrounds and sporting events. Saraland City Council President, Newton Cromer, says they did not receive much opposition. "When it was explained that you can go outside and smoke like the restaurants had been doing, people realized it is good for the patrons."

Businesses that do not comply will be fined $100 for a first offense, $200 for a second, and $500 after that.
