INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana's governor says the wind gust that toppled a stage at the Indiana State Fair last night was a "fluke" that no one could have anticipated.
Five people were killed and dozens injured when the stage collapsed onto a crowd waiting for the country duo Sugarland to perform. A National Weather Service meteorologist estimated the gust at 60 to 70 mph.
Gov. Mitch Daniels says that precautions were taken before the storm, but no one could have foreseen such a strong gust focused in one place.
Four people were killed when the metal scaffolding that holds lights and other stage equipment fell, and a fifth died overnight at a hospital.
State police say 45 people were taken to hospitals, and others might have gone on their own.
All activities at the state fair have been canceled for today, and Sugarland has called off a performance at the Iowa State Fair.
Sugarland singer Jennifer Nettles says in a statement that she is moved by the pain of those affected by the tragedy and by the heroism of those who stepped in to help.
