You can still see the storm damage at Alexander Hardware--the tornado wrecked the roof--and since march has split it in two. They've opened a second location across the street and are keeping both open while they move. For others the recovery process is very slow.
“We have no insurance so the past five months have accomplished nothing for us,” says homeowner Mollie Reed. The Reed family lost a house and now they're trying to sell this smashed warehouse hoping someone will bite.
“I finally decided the other day to put a for sale sign up and maybe the good lord will bring me a buyer, who knows, he might,” says Reed. Other businesses like this Food World, Rite Aid and Church's Chicken are back up and running. In march this gas station was destroyed at the corner of Theodore Dawes and Old Pascagoula Roads. Today a lot of that debris has been cleared but there's still a mess left--leaving some concerned. Calls to the business owner were not returned. County officials say this is a natural disaster and does not fall under the county’s “junk” ordinance.
A contractor at the site says they'll begin tearing down the old gas station Friday morning.
