Gottfried, who played at UMS Wright and Alabama, was in his 11th season as the Tide's head coach when he resigned January 2009.
Gottfried compiled an overall record of 210-131, including 83-82 in Southeastern Conference games. Gottfried led Alabama to one SEC regular season championship and five NCAA Tournament appearances.
He also spent three seasons as head coach at Murray State. In 14 seasons as a college head coach, Gottfried compiled a 278-155 record.
On Monday, three high profile coaches removed their names from contention of the Wolfpack’s search. VCU athletics director Norwood Teague told The Richmond Times-Dispatch that Shaka Smart is staying. Smart led Virginia Commonwealth to a stunning berth in this year's Final Four.
"We are elated to say the least," Teague told the paper.
Meanwhile, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that coach Mick Cronin will accept an extension and remain at the school. And Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall announced during his weekly radio program that he would be staying with the Shockers.
In an email sent to fans Monday night, Yow addressed concerns regarding the search, including rumors of with whom the school had spoken.
"There have been telephone conversations with successful coaches that did not develop into meetings -- sometimes because we did not wish to pursue those coaches further and sometimes because the coach involved is happy where he is," Yow wrote.
"I realize there are multiple rumors surfacing about the nature of the search on websites and in newspapers. Once our new coach is hired, I will be in a position to bring perspective to a number of those rumors."
Former Wolfpack coach Sidney Lowe announced his resignation after going 86-78 overall at State and 25-55 in ACC play.
