Even though the economy is slowly improving, there are still thousands of people in Mobile County who are out of work and need help putting food on the table.
Staffing agencies in the area told News Five that hundreds of people a month have come looking for work even if it's temporary.
The Department of Human Resources also says 30,000 more people in the Mobile County are now receiving food stamps and believe it's because many are no longer employed.
"Two years ago we served about 67,000 people. Twelve months ago, we served about 80,000. This July we have served over 90,000 people in the county with food assistance benefits. There are households that are receiving benefits and we're just about $12 million in one month's worth of issuance," said Department of Human Resources Director Rose Johnson.
There are five unemployed workers for every job available in the United States.
Even though Alabama's jobless rate hit a 15-month low, Mobile County's unemployment rate is above the national average of 10%.
