Many people around Mobile are taking safety precautions since the murders of Zoa White and Kyser Miree.
Included in those precautions: buying guns.
Dottie Gill and Abbie Stevens live in midtown Mobile and were shaken by the murders of White and Miree.
They said that's one reason why they have dogs.
And Gill said, "My husband has a gun and he is a hunter. He only uses the pistol when he goes in the woods for snakes, but he has really thought about bringing it in."
Stevens said, "I would say, more than not, people on the street are probably arming themselves. Its a sad truth. We love our neighborhood, but we're going to protect ourselves."
When asked if she had thought about buying a gun, Stevens said, "Absolutely."
Crawford Inge lives nearby.
He has dogs, too, and something else.
Inge said, "I hunt and I have a couple of handguns. I do keep one in my house, and I don't worry. If somebody comes after me, I'm protected."
The president of the Historic Murphy District Association said safety awareness among members of her organization has definitely grown.
Michele Nolen-Schmidt said, "We do have a group that's interested in taking a firearms safety course. I think that's very important for anyone who plans to own a firearm, and we do have several people that have already agreed to participate in that."
The association said it plans to have the courses over a couple of weekends in October.
They would be taught by an instructor certified with the National Rifle Association.
