The Mobile County commissioner at the center of his mistress' murder investigation, became the center today of the heated District Attorney race.

In an email to her supporters, Ashley Rich, a candidate for the republican nomination, said her opponent, Mark Erwin, made big bucks working as a lawyer for Commissioner Stephen Nodine.

"One could ask what has Mark Erwin done to contribute to reducing crime," Rich asked in the email. "His real job for the past 5 years has been working as a lawyer for Steve Nodine at the Mobile County Commission where last year alone he was paid over $250,000."

A spokesperson for the county confirmed Erwin's law firm, Satterwhite and Erwin LLC, was paid $256,000 for legal services last year, and since the start of this fiscal year, county records show Erwin's firm has made another $130,495.

Rich's email was sent weeks after Erwin's campaign began airing a television ad linking Rich to the current and recently controversial district attorney, John Tyson. Rich has worked as a prosecutor in Tyson's office for 14 years and supported his campaign in 2004, but Rich told supporters the allegation that only 1% of cases go to a jury "could not be farther from the truth."

Rich, who says she has tried thousands of cases including more than 100 jury trials, wrote in the email her opponent has "never prosecuted a felony criminal case in his career. His only experience with a murder case was a few months ago defended a man charged with murder."

Mark Erwin declined to comment on the email.

News Five requested the invoices for Erwin and Mobile County's chief attorney Jay Ross, but Mobile County spokesperson Nancy Johnson said the invoices are protected by attorney-client privilege.
