State and county officials are moving along with the Foley Beach Express extension, which will eventually connect South Baldwin County with Interstates 10 and 65, but a portion of where part of the north-south corridor will go is still up in the air. Last year, another north-south corridor route near the Alabama-Florida state line was considered, but county officials believe building a four-lane highway closer to Robertsdale and Loxley is a smarter move.
The corridor will provide another north-south hurricane evacuation route and will alleviate traffic "nightmares" on Highway 59. Right now, Highway 59 is the only major evacuation route.
The north-south connector will cost millions of dollars to build. Highway officials are considering charging a toll to help finance the project.
