Alabama Attorney General Troy King said in a news conference Monday he has sent a letter to the commander of the Governor's Task Force on Illegal Gambling relieving him of his duties. Mobile District Attorney John Tyson, Jr. has been leading the task force, raiding electronic bingo parlors per the Governor's wishes.
King said of Tyson, "He has had unrestrained authority and unlimited resources--he has failed." The Attorney General said he would assume authority of the task force and bring order to chaos.
However, in his own news conference, Tyson said King did not have the ability to operate the task force and vowed to challenge his (King's) authority before the Alabama Supreme Court. Tyson said he works for the Governor.
Governor Riley also said today if King exerted authority over the task force he would, "send it up to the Supreme Court and let them decide. Whatever they decide we will abide by." Riley was in Mobile for an unrelated event.
