Mobile police are investigating a deadly crash that followed a police chase.
An officer spotted a car driving without its headlights on around 8:30 Saturday night in the area of Dauphin and Upham Streets. The officer tried to stop the car, but the driver took off. The chase ended when the officer lost sight of the car.
The same officer drove up on a crash at Old Shell Road and Cooley Street. It turns out, the car involved in the chase hit a power pole and a tree.
Mark Williams watched the chase from a nearby restaurant.
“A car came flying by with its lights off, travelling in excess of 100 miles per hour, followed very closely by a police cruiser," Williams said. "A few seconds later, the power went off in the restaurant and we knew that the car had struck a pole down the street.”
The driver, 34-year-old Eric Manuel, and 31-year-old Wykyim Jowers were pronounced dead at the scene. A 29-year-old male passenger was ejected from the car. He was transported to USA Medical Center with serious but non life threatening injuries.
MPD's Traffic Accident Unit and Internal Affairs are both looking into the crash.
