Living Life In A Cardboard Box

Social service workers say its an issue you might not expect in Baldwin County.
They say the number of homeless people are increasing.
One organization that helps homeless families held an unusual fundraiser Friday.
It was designed to increase awareness.
There were cardboard boxes all over Oak Hollow Farm in Fairhope.
Young people from church groups around Baldwin County slept in them to raise money for "Family Promise," a group that helps the homeless.
Beth Zaricor with Trinity Presbyterian Church said, "They house the homeless using area churches, and they feed the homeless and house them a week at a time on a rotating basis."
The idea is for the young people to get an idea of the problems homeless people face.
Zaricor said, "They have their own boxes they bring in. They're decorating them, and we give them a prize for the best decorated box and also the person who raises the most money."
Some of the cardboard homes are pretty elaborate and clever.
One was called "Box Fil-A."
Then, right next door, there was "Box Pro Shop's Outdoor World."
Philip Cork was one of the young people sleeping in a box.
He said, "I expect it to be rather cold tonight and sleeping in some cardboard and a couple of blankets certainly will show me what it means to live like this."
When asked why she was taking part in the fundraiser instead of going out on spring break or doing something else, Sarah Byrd said, "I think its a good experience to realize what the homeless people go through."
