Everyone wants to be number one. According to Readers Digest, Alabama drivers are dying to be number one. The magazine ranks the state first in highway deaths because of speeding.
Law enforcement officers are not surprised. We rode along with an officer of the Daphne Police Department who was able to nab three speeders within thirty minutes. He let them off with a verbal warning. But the Alabama Department of Public Safety says speeding and drinking are the two most common factors involved in highway deaths in the state.
The Readers Digest findings also revealed that Alabama ranked ninth for deaths involving alcohol. And the state ranked ninth overall for having the deadliest highways.
Montana ranked first overall for deadliest highways while Massachusetts ranked 50th.
