More than 900 oystermen and 300 boats showed up for moving day on Mobile Bay.
They're moving some 6-million pounds of oysters about 15 miles from just east of Brookley field to a better environment near Fowl River. For ten days, oystermen and women will sack oysters for the journey south. Each sack pays up to 11 dollars.
The idea is to relocate the oysters to a 800-acre public reef, let them cleanse themselves and harvest them.
If this works, it could be the rebirth of the oyster business in Alabama after taking a big blow from Hurricane Katrina. Keith Clarke really hopes this works. "If we start some new reefs, it's gonna be real good for everybody."
The project is funded by federal Katrina money with a price tag of 1.5 million dollars.
We should know in about a month if the relocation project worked.
