Officials in the City of Fairhope believe they have a good shot to be selected as a test city for Google's lightning fast fiber optic internet system The company says the service would be one hundred times faster than the average high speed internet connection.
People can already nominate Fairhope at the city's website or on its Facebook page. But, IT Director Jason Collee is putting the finishing touches on the lengthy application the city must submit to Google by March 26th. He says because of the size of the city, 16 thousand residents, and other factors, he believe Google will give Fairhope a good look.
"We've heard from citizens and businesses who say they've been filling out the nomination form so we think Google knows about us and they're just waiting to get this application, we hope." he says.
Google says it wants to provide the service to 50 thousand to half a million people at first. The search engine giant has not said when it will make a decision on test markets but hopes to get the project started by the end of the year. Google says in city's selected it will offer the ultra high speed service at competitive rates.
