A 20-year-veteran of the Mobile Police Department has resigned amidst allegations that he had inappropriate sexual contact with an underage girl.
Police put Officer Marshall Freeman on administrative leave March 3rd and launched an investigation. The department says Freeman resigned Thursday instead of facing an administrative hearing.
"As Police Chief and a father of two girls, I will never tolerate this type of behavior of by any member of the police department or the community," Chief Tyrone Williams said. "The unethical conduct of this man is egregious. He violated the standards set for the job and the trust of our citizens."
News 5 has learned this is not the first time Freeman has been in trouble with the department. Mobile police confirm Freeman has been suspended a couple of times, but they would not say why.
Freeman was assigned to the Community Services Division where he worked closely with young children. With the Gang Resistance Education And Training or GREAT program, Williams taught kids to resist gangs, drugs, and violence. He also participated in the Kids and Cops program, a summer camp designed to change the way some kids feel about cops.
Mobile police will forward the results of its investigation to the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office. They will decide whether to file any criminal charges.
