Children in Alabama aren't getting off to the best start.
Research released this week from Auburn University reveals 40% of babies in the state are born to single mothers. The number is even higher in Mobile County where 48% of newborns have moms who aren't married.
The Alabama campaign to preven teen pregnancies says teenagers make up the majority of single moms, and it's not just the mother and children who are affected.
"Financial responsibility falls on society when the parents can't muster up what they need to do," says Lydia Pettijohn of The Family Center in Mobile.
In 2004, teenage pregnancies cost the state $67 million in public health care and child welfare.
