Investigators with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are in the Florida panhandle trying to determine what caused a plane crash that killed a Birmingham neurosurgeon.

Dr. Evan Zeiger was killed Saturday afternoon when his AT6-Texan, a World War II era stunt plane, crashed about a mile offshore from Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, located between Grayton Beach and Miramar Beach. The plane sank shortly after impact.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team helped locate the aircraft and recovered the two bodies inside. Zeiger's female passenger has not been identified. An autopsy will be performed Monday at the Medical Examiner’s Office in Fort Walton Beach.

A salvage team from Atlanta will work to recover the aircraft so the FAA and NTSB can examine the wreckage to help determine what may have gone wrong.
