The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is investigating how a man died after leading State Troopers on a chase.
According to the Department of Public Safety, a State Trooper attempted to stop 26 year old Melvin Allen, Jr. for speeding around 12:40 Wednesday morning on Schillinger Road at Moffett. The trooper ran a check of Allen's license plate. The 2005 Chevy Avalanche had been stolen about an hour earlier during a carjacking at a gas station on St. Stephens Road in Prichard.
Allen took off and led the trooper on a short chase down Schillinger, at speeds of over 100 miles per hour. He turned onto Howell's Ferry Road and then into a residential neighborhood. That's when Allen got out and ran.
When the trooper caught up with Allen, struggle ensued. Mobile Police responded to the scene. Allen was transported to Providence Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The preliminary autopsy results don't show how Allen died.
The ABI will report its findings to the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office. The Department of Public Safety is also conducting an internal investigation.
