It's common for Hollywood celebrities to donate their money and time during a crisis. So 22-year old actor Matt Smith was surprised when hardly anyone on the West Coast immediately responded to the oil disaster in the Gulf. Matt Smith has been seen on the Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and has a new series on HBO. He took a year off acting in 2009 and lived on the Gulf coast. Smith fell in love with the place, and it was his dream to live there someday. He went back to acting again, but decided to again take time off from his Los Angeles acting lifestyle to road trip to the Gulf of Mexico and find out what was really happening with the BP oil spill. Smith and producer Richard Virgen co-founded Project Gulf Impact just a couple weeks before their trip, and it has already generated hundreds of supporters through social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, and their blog. They recruited a team of Hollywood filmmakers, producers, videographers, etc, to drive forty hours from Los Angeles to the Gulf coast. Smith says he feels like the real story has been misrepresented to the rest of the nation, and he wants to give the people of the Gulf a voice. He hopes to package all of the information he has received and make a TV documentary. But if that falls through, he says he has no problem piecing the story together on video websites like YouTube. His goal is to inspire reaction from the rest of the country, and to make people want to travel here to help volunteer. You can follow Matt Smith and his team on Twitter @PrjGulfImpact.
