New Titanic expedition will create 3D map of wreck

(AP) - A new expedition to the Titanic shipwreck is scheduled to begin next month.

Organizers say the 20-day trip will be the most scientifically advanced mission yet to the site where the luxurious ocean liner came to rest in 1912.

Scientists plan to use advanced imaging technology to create a 3D "map" of the ship that will eventually be available to the public.

They also plan to use cameras and sonar to probe a 6-square-mile area strewn with debris and artifacts from the ship.

The expedition is being paid for by RMS Titanic, a company that conducts traveling displays of Titanic artifacts. The coming trip is for research and will not collect artifacts.
