A large oil slick is threatening Gulf Shores beaches and could impact the beach within 24 hours. You can't see the slick from ground-level, but we noticed a rainbow sheen snaking along the shoreline for miles between the first and second sandbars. The oil is about 200 yards offshore.
You can smell the oil...and tar balls are washing up in some spots. The usually emerald-green Gulf is brown and muddy-looking in some areas.
