Former Circuit Court Judge Herman Thomas, cleared three months ago of sex abuse charges, is talking about the allegations, the trial and his run for the Alabama State Senate.
Thomas, who announced plans to run for the District 33 seat last week, will sit down with News Five's Jessica Taloney Monday morning. Thomas was accused of sodomizing, sexually abusing and assaulting defendants in his courtroom in exchange for leniency from the bench.
After a three week trial, a jury of seven women and five men found Thomas not guilty on 7 of the 21 charges. Special Judge Claud Neilson, who was brought in from Marengo County to preside over the case, then ruled from the bench on the remaining 14 counts, acquitting the former judge of all of them.
Thomas is challenging incumbent Senator Vivian Davis Figures (D), who was first elected to the District 33 seat in 1997.
Thomas denies his candidacy is an effort to get revenge on Figures, who testified for prosecutors during the trial. Figures' son is one of thirteen men who prosecutors say Thomas victimized.
