The U.S Coast Guard is searching for a missing pilot stationed at NAS Whiting Field.
Around 6:40 p.m. Saturday, Air Traffic Control contacted the Coast Guard saying a T-34C Turbomentor was no longer visible on radar. It had crashed into Lake Pontchartrain.
The Coast Guard launched two small boats and crews from Coast Guard Station New Orleans and an MH-65C rescue helicopter and crew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans. They started searching a 5-by-7-mile area, with the center of the search approximately 1 mile north of Lakefront Airport. They believe both pilots were clinging to the wreckage before it sank.
Coast Guard crews searched through the night, recovering one of the pilots, who suffered minor injuries.
The pilots were on a routine cross-country training mission when their plane went down.
