Gov. Candidates Split On Road Proposal

Democratic candidates for governor say they support a proposal that would start a record $1 billion highway building program, but Republican candidates are taking another route.

Alabama's Democratic candidates for governor are supportive and the Republican candidates mostly opposed to a proposal that would start a record $1 billion highway building program when the new governor takes office.

The plan by Democratic legislators would take $100 million per year for 10 years from a state savings account.

The plan is backed by both Democratic candidates for governor: state Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks and U.S. Rep. Artur Davis.

On the Republican side of the ballot, state Rep. Robert Bentley and former two-year college Chancellor Bradley Byrne like it. Greenville businessman Tim James, former Chief Justice Roy Moore, former state agency director Bill Johnson, and State Treasurer Kay Ivey are either opposed or urging caution.
