Former First Lady Laura Bush has announced $1 million in grants for school libraries damaged by hurricanes.

She says the money will help libraries at 24 schools in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Texas. The bulk of the money goes to schools in Louisiana.

The money is being handed out through the Laura Bush Foundation and its Gulf Coast School Library Recovery Initiative. Since the devastating Gulf Coast hurricanes of 2005, the initiative has raised about $5.7 million for school libraries.

Bush made her announcement Friday at the John McDonogh high school in New Orleans.
