Volunteer firefighters knew they were racing against the clock to save Joshua Parker's life.
Parker lost control of his pick-up truck on County Road 87 in Elsanor Tuesday morning, slammed into a tree then flipped over. The impact was so powerful, Parker was pinned inside the cab. Parker lost massive amounts of blood and was fading in and out of consciousness.
Emergency crews used the jaws of life to peel back the roof of the truck and after an hour, were finally able to pull Parker to safety. Officers working the wreck say the volunteer firefighters are heroes...but they don't think so.
"We're not heroes," says Chief John Lucas of the Robertsdale V.F.D. "No sir. We're just here to do a job because we love the community we live in."
"The reason why we volunteer is to help our community," says Capt. Brad Johnson with the Elsanor V.F.D. "And that means you, too, or anybody else that's watching. If you come through here and you need help, we'll be here."
Parker was airlifted to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola. His injuries are not life-threatening.
