A Causey Middle School teacher is in jail charged with sexually abusing a 9 year old boy.

Charles Lewis Jr., 49, was arrested Tuesday at a home in Summerdale.

According to the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office, the victim is a "family friend," not a student. Investigators say the victim spent the night at Lewis' home in July 2009. The victim told his mother Lewis offered him alcohol and inappropriately touched him. According to a sheriff's office press release, Lewis admitted to touching the child but insisted it was not intentional.

Lewis, who teaches sixth grade science and reading, was named 2008-2009 Teacher of the Year, according to his biography on the Causey Middle School website. Lewis has been a teacher for 18 years and previously taught at Baker Elementary School and South Brookley Elementary School.

Mobile County School District Spokesperson Nancy Pierce says Lewis is on paid administrative leave.
