Counterfeiting Scam In South Mobile County

Fake FBI Agents tell man to withdraw $20,000.

A Grand Bay couple said they were victims of a scam that could have cost them thousands of dollars, and, more importantly, their lives.
It happened when three men went to their home posing as FBI agents Tuesday morning.
Larry Peyton said three men armed with handguns and wearing FBI shirts and badges came to his home and told him he was under investigation for counterfeiting.
Sergeant Jason Edwards with the Bayou La Batre Police Department said, "They told him (in order) to clear himself, he needed to go down to his local bank, withdraw $20,000, and let them inspect it to make sure there was no counterfeiting or anything going on".
Peyton went to the Regions Bank branch in Bayou La Batre with the three men, withdrew the $20,000, and gave it to one of the men who said he was an undercover officer.
But then, instead of going inside the bank with Peyton as he promised, Peyton said the man walked past the bank door.
Peyton said, "When he walked off, I said, 'If you don't give me my money, I'm going to take it. I'm going to jump on you right out here in the middle of this highway.' He reached in his pocket and gave me my money.
Peyton's wife said everything could have ended tragically back at their home.
Chantaye Peyton said, "They could have blown our brains out right here, but, luckily, we didn't have that money in our possession at the time."
How real did the fake FBI agents look?
Larry Peyton said they had "the badges, the paperwork, all the information, and a search warrant to my house."
Chantaye Peyton said, "I remember what they look like. If I see them again, I may get them before the police do, because I am licensed to carry."
Bayou La Police described the men as black, 5'11 to 6'0, 40 to 50 years old, driving a black Ford Crown Victoria.
The Peytons got all their money back, but they said in thanksgiving for not being hurt, they gave half of it, $10,000, to their church.
