The body of one of two Baldwin County hunters missing since last month has been discovered floating in the Gulf of Mexico.
A civilian spotted the body Tuesday afternoon east of the Chandeleur Islands. LTJG James McKnight of the US Coast Guard's Mobile Sector says the body was found 30 miles south of Pascagoula.
A Coast Guard helicopter from New Orleans was dispatched, and the crew put down a marker to track the body as they waited for an 87 foot cutter, Cobia, to arrive from Mobile. The Cobia retrieved the body around 7:00 p.m.
According to a press release from North Baldwin Sheriff's Search and Rescue, "due to the condition of the remains an immediate identification was unable to be made." The Mobile County Medical Examiner will use dental records to identify the body. An identification is expected today.
Jason Brown, 23, and Alan Clemens, 29, were last seen December 6th when they told friends and family they were going squirel hunting in a canoe in the Tensaw River Delta.
The canoe and two paddles were found early in the search, but there has been no sign of the men.
In the press release, NBSSR insists they are "not making any assumptions regarding these remains" until the medical examiner makes a positive identification.
A press conference is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Coast Guard base at Brookley Field.
