Investigators say James O'Berry approached 26 year old Nellie Pelts at a Wal-Mart store, "...within 20 minutes she's dead from a violent murder", says Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes. Authorities believe Pelts wanted to show O'Berry her church. In front of the church is where police say he stabbed her several times and ran over her with his car. O'Berry told reporters, "We were talking about church. I'm a Christian..she's a Christian. I don't know what happened". Chief Clabes says, "He indicated to our investigators that something bad had happened to him while he was in prison..and because of that he suffered from post traumatic stress disorder."

O'Berry served prison time in Alabama. In 1982, he was convicted of first degree rape and kidnapping in Mobile County.
