Forbes Magazine has ranked the nation's
75 largest metropolitan areas in terms of best and worst for
commuters and Birmingham did not fare well in the rankings.
The Birmingham-Hoover area was ranked 52nd for the length of
traffic delays at rush hour. The area was 56th for the percentage
of commuters who get to work by car-pooling, biking, walking or
public transit; and 34th for the percentage of commuters who spend
an hour or more getting to work.
The magazine listed Birmingham as having the worst commute
among smaller cities in the survey. Problems listed included
congestion along Interstate 65. The magazine said that only 37
percent of drivers are able to get to work in under 20 minutes in
the Birmingham-Hoover area.
