An employee accused of stealing thousands from the Mobile County Revenue Commission isn't going to jail.
We first reported the missing tax money back in November. An investigation revealed that it was $14,000 dollars instead of the $20,000 we were originally told.
The worker's name isn't being released but Commissioner Marilyn Wood confirms she was a cashier and had worked in the office for ten years.
The incident happened recently but Wood won't tell us how the worker was able to pocket the money.
What we do know is that the female employee was fired in late January but won't be charged with a crime.
Commissioner Wood sat down with Tiffany Craig to talk about the case. "If someone stole from here, why isn't she in jail? Because the sheriff's office wouldn't prosecute!"
Wood says she passed the case to the Mobile County Sheriff's Office. Spokesperson Lori Myles says after their investigation was complete, the Mobile County District Attorney's office got the case.
In the end, Myles explained in a statement that "from a criminal stand point, there was not enough evidence to charge any one person with this crime."
There were apparently just too many hands in the money at the property tax office and Wood promises change. "We're tightening all type of policies, procedures everything like that so this will never happen again."
