H1N1 Death In Santa Rosa County

The Santa Rosa County Health Department received confirmation this week of a second death associated with H1N1 flu. The decedent is a 34 year old male Santa Rosa County resident. In accordance with departmental policy, no other information will be released out of respect for the family’s privacy. It is the second death in Santa Rosa County. Statewide 202 deaths have been associated with H1N1.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family,” said Sandra L. Park, A.R.N.P., Administrator of the Santa Rosa County Health Department. “The loss of a loved one is always a tragedy.”

In recent weeks, Santa Rosa County has experienced a slight increase in the number of tests that have been positive for Type A flu, which could be H1N1. Health officials are not alarmed by the increase and will continue to monitor the situation. The public is also encouraged to continue to practice preventive precautions:
• washing hands frequently with soap and warm water, or using an alcohol based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available;
• covering coughs and sneezes with a disposable tissue, or sneezing or coughing into a sleeve;
• staying at home when sick, and keeping sick children home from schools, until fever free without fever reducing medication for at least 24 to 48 hours;
• and getting the H1N1 vaccine.

The H1N1 vaccine is voluntary and free of charge at all Santa Rosa County Health Department locations and all locations will be open extended hours through the month of February to provide additional opportunities to individuals who want the vaccine. The Milton and Midway Clinics will be open 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8:00 a.m. to Noon on Saturday. The Jay Clinic will be open 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, and 8:00 a.m. to Noon on Saturday.

Seasonal flu vaccine is also available at the health department for a $20.00 fee, payable by cash or check. Medicare will also cover the cost of the seasonal flu vaccine for those who are eligible.
