A woman responsible for collecting money for a local law enforcement office is now charged with stealing more than $100,000.
Catherine Lister is accused of stealing the money from the Escambia County, Florida Sheriff's Office.
Lister got out on bond Thursday afternoon, and News Five was the only crew on the scene when she left jail.
Lister was silent when I asked if she wanted to say anything about her arrest.
Her bond was set at $25,000 and she left in a waiting car.
Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said, "She is currently being charged with a first degree felony, which is First Degree Larceny, for the theft of monies in excess of $100,000."
Actually, sheriffs officials said they've identified money missing since 2008, but, according to Lt. Ray Briggs, "We really don't have the answer for the total dollars or how long this is ongoing at this time."
Right now, they believe it was more than $130,000 and said none of the money has been recovered.
Lister was a 32 year member of the sheriff's office and worked in the finance department.
Morgan said, "It was caught actually Monday. The individual in question retired last Friday."
Lt. Briggs said, "Someone that took over her duties noticed the discrepancy and, when that discrepancy was found, we began to look further, and things began to come to light fairly quickly."
How do investigators believe she took the money?
Sheriff Morgan said, "There was actually a scenario set up where she was using two sets of books for accounting procedures."
According to the arrest report, Lister admitted taking the money, but, Morgan said, "We have no reason to believe, at this time, or I believe at any time in the near future, that we have nothing but professionals in that office. I believe we will find this was one errant employee."
Morgan said he won't speculate on a motive for the crime, but he said additional charges could be filed, including embezzlement.
