Alabama Governor Riley was in Mobile on Monday to talk about his "jumpstarting Jobs" economic development program. It will provide a temporary tax credit for every new job an employer creates and fills by hiring a worker from the unemployment rolls. While here, he sat down and talked with me about the program and the controversy over electronic bingo machines.
The Governor says the machines are illegal, plain and simple. He says state and federal courts have ruled that if the machines require no mental participation, then they are illegal slot machines. He says, it's his job to enforce the law equally. He has rid the machines in every county except Macon and Houston. He says, with or without the help of Attorney General Troy King. He praised the addition of Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson, Junior to his anti-gambling task force.
