Is Your Child's School Crossing Safe?

A new effort is underway to make school zones and other areas less dangerous.

Do you worry about your child's safety when they go to school?
A lot of parents do, especially if their children walk to school.
Now, school leaders and investigators in Mobile have teamed up to try to improve unsafe areas.
At the top of their list is Fonde' Elementary School at Cottage Hill and Azalea Road in Mobile.
Two months ago, a fifth grade student at Fonde' was hit and critically hurt by a motorist.
Kim Ray has two children who go to Fonde'.
She says the area is dangerous.
Ray said, "They need to come down with the speed limit. 35 is kind of too fast for someone to be coming when we have five to eleven year olds walking home."
School officials said there are couple of problems on Azalea near Cottage Hill.
There's a curve where they say motorists can't see children.
There's also shurbbery that crosses the sidewalk and can force children to walk closer to the street.
Now, two community groups are trying to make areas like this safer.
One is the National Center for Bicycling and Walking.
Sharon Roerty with the group said the center is "looking at schools, parks, and recreational facilities so that kids can get around."
The other group is "Smart Coast," a group promoting smart growth in the region.
Wendy Allen with the group said members hope to make the Fonde' study part of a pilot program to work with "parents, the principals, the school board, and the city, because this is not just an isolated school issue."
Fonde' parents will have a chance to meet with safety officials Tuesday night at 6:30 at the school to give their thoughts on what improvements need to be made.
