A Mississippi House Committee took no action Monday on a bill that proposes creating a state lottery to help pay for college scholarships.

Only five of the 15 Gaming Committee members attended the meeting where the bill was discussed. They decided to contact their absent colleagues to seek their opinions before taking any action.

The bill will die unless it passes the Gaming Committee before a Tuesday deadline. Republican Gov. Haley Barbour opposes creating a lottery, as do
influential groups such as the Mississippi Baptist Convention.

Democratic Rep. Willie Bailey of Greenville said he wants to create a lottery and he believes legislators should not avoid discussing the issue just because the governor or others oppose it.

The bill is House Bill 337.
