Baldwin County's Fort Morgan peninsula is known for its rich history, scenic Gulf views and abundant wildlife - but a serious problem is now under investigation that could taint the beach community's pristine image. The News 5 Wind Creek Chopper spotted an illegal trash dump down an abandonded road just a mile from the historic Civil War fort. The road is covered with piles of trash, debris and old furniture.

From the ground, the situation looks just as bad. We found bags of old clothes, beer cans, pill bottles, broken televisions, box springs and even rotting food at the illegal dump. While we were shooting video of the scene, we ran off a coyote chowing down on a pile of rotting food.

County officials are aware of the illegal dump and say they'll clean it up next week. Authorities say dumping is against the law and is punishable by both civil and criminal penalities.
