On Tuesday, B.P. unveiled a new, state-of-the-art beach cleaning machine the company believes will improve oil and tar removal. The machine is called the "Sand Shark" and is designed to remove oil and tar up to 18 inches below the beach surface. But skeptics weren't as impressed with the 300-thousand dollar piece of equipment as BP officials were.
"One piece of machinery is not going to make things right," says Phillip West, Coastal Resources manager with the City of Orange Beach.
"I hope it's not another dog and pony show," says Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon. "What I'd like to do is get BP to do a major beach renourishment and refurbishment project."
Kennon has asked BP to rebuild 32 miles of Baldwin County's beaches from Ft. Morgan to the Alabama-Florida state line...a project that would cost 50 millon dollars. Kennon says so far, BP has not responded to his request.
