A close call over the weekend for a former Prichard police officer.
He was shot at a car wash.
Eddie Ragland has now has been upgraded from serious to fair condition at USA Medical Center.
The shooting happened at the American Car Wash on St. Stephen's Road just before 11:00 Saturday morning.
Prichard Police olice said Ragland was approached by a man with a handgun who tried to rob him, but that Ragland pulled his own handgun, and shots were exchanged.
Jerry Mosley is friends with Ragland.
Ragland is a retired Prichard Police Officer and Mosley is a retired Prichard Firefighter.
Mosley said, "I've known Eddie probably since he started his career. He was always on scene. In fact, he was the photographer. He's just a good guy. Everybody liked him, and he was a good worker."
Ragland and Mosley are among about 140 retired Prichard city employees who have haven't received their pensions in almost a year.
Many of the workers have appeared before the Prichard City Council trying to get their back pay.
The workers haven't received their money because the City of Prichard filed for bankruptcy.
When asked if the situation has been stressful for Ragland and the other pensioners, Mosley said, "Yeah. Its always on your mind. You wonder, what am I going to do? I 'm too old now to go out and start all over again."
Ragland was helping make ends meet by working as a police officer with Mobile Regional Airport.
He's been there for more than two years.
Bill Sisson, the executive director of Mobile Regional Airport, said, "Eddie's very well liked here at the airport. His colleagues here think the world of him. He's a standup guy, and our concern is, really, for his health right now and his speedy recovery."
Mosley said 2010 has been a tough year for Ragland.
He said, "I know he's had some bad luck here lately. His wife died back in April, I believe."
Friends say Ragland's wife died of a heart attack.
Prichard Police said they are interviewing persons of interest in the case, but haven't made any arrests.
