Mobile's Mayor Says City Is Cutting Back

While pushing for a sales tax increase Mayor Sam Jones says the city is tightening its budgetary belt.

Mobile Mayor Sam Jones says the city is responding to the recession by cutting back. In addition to pushing for the extra 1-cent sales tax Jones says they've already slashed $20 million from this year's budget.

"Now if that's business as usual, that's not my definition of business as usual, we have cut down to the point where we are concerned about whether we are jeopardizing the quality of some of our operations,” says Mobile Mayor Sam Jones. Other Mobile County cities like Prichard and Bayou La Batre already have a sales tax rate of 10%.
