A Mobile fifth grader has been arrested for taking a loaded gun to school.
It happened Wednesday morning at Hamilton Elementary School in Chickasaw.
A spokesperson for the Mobile County Public School System said another student saw the gun and told an administrator.
Police responded and arrested the fifth grader.
Alissa Goodman said she's in the same class with the boy who was arrested.
She said on Tuesday, the boy had an argument with a girl at the school.
Goodman said, "They were arguing and he called her some cuss words and started hitting her, and I got in the middle of it and said, 'Don't touch her, she's only a girl.' And he started hitting me, so I hit him back."
Goodman said this happened at physical education class and the teacher didn't see it.
She also said, "He's been messing with her ever since she moved to the school. "
When asked if she thought the boy was a bully, Goodman said, "Yeah."
Alissa's mother, Alice Hall, said she called the school system Wednesday.
Hall said, "I think its an outrage that our children are supposed to be safe in school, and we should be notified if something like that happens."
Another parent said she was angry and called the school system, too.
Angela Allen said, "I spoke to someone in human resources and in security. As long as the child isn't hurt, they don't feel it's a threat. If it's a loaded gun, it's a threat."
Hall said, "They should have notified the parents and let us make the choice if we wanted to come and get our kids from school early or let them stay. Its our choice. Its our right."
Goodman said the principal came to her class personally Wednesday and talked about the incident.
She said, "The principal said that the parents shouldn't spread it around and call the cops or (say) anything about it."
Speaking about her daughter, Hall said, "She doesn't want to go back to school tomorrow and I'm not going to send her."
When asked how she felt about going to school Thursday, Goodman said, "A little scared."
A school system spokesperson also said the student has been suspended and the school district will recommend the student be expelled.
