A Pensacola Church says amen for the last time. The final service at Richard's Memorial United Methodist Church was held in the Brownsville community today, 9/27/09. Church officials say a dwindling congregation, aging neighborhood and poor economy all contributed to the closing. Services had been averaging roughly 40 worshipers. Today pews were filled with a bunch of people who wanted to say good-bye.
“It's sad, bittersweet, but it's also an opportunity for us to accept new challenges and I believe God will have wonderful things for us to do in the future,” says Lay Leader Paul Henderson.
At 38,000 square feet, Henderson says the church was too big to take care of. At its peak 50 years ago, he says they averaged 750 people a service.
