Democratic Congressman Patrick Kennedy of Rhode Island, the son of the late Ted Kennedy, is expected to tour the tanker site at Brookley Field on Monday. He is a member of the House Appropriations Committee.
That news comes after Defense Secretary Robert Gates hands the power back to the Air Force to pick a winner in the 40 billion dollar tanker contest.
In February 2008, the AF chose Northrop Grumman and EADS to build the new fleet of air refuelers in Mobile. Boeing quickly protested the win.
The Pentagon took over the deal last year after a watchdog group found problems with the way the Air Force picked its winner.
Bay Haas is a local consultant for the tanker project and says the team is ready to get the contest going again. "We're ready to go. I think it's impressive that this community is still together and still ready to fight for this, for this period of time. We worked on this a long time and I don't see any lessoning of enthusiasm to get out there and get this done."
The draft Request for Proposal is expected to be released any day now and a winner should be announced by the summer of 2010.
