(AP) - The state has scheduled a public
meeting this month to hear concerns over a planned landfill in the
tiny community of Charity Chapel near the north Mobile County line.
The landfill, which will be run by Advance Disposal, likely will
take in up to 4,000 tons of trash per day from a five-state area,
including Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and Mississippi. The landfill
will collect non-hazardous wastes like household garbage,
construction debris and trees.
Lambert says his company is arranging with the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service to move nearly 80 endangered tortoises living
where the landfill will go. The landfill could create about
$800,000 annually for the county, which has no sales tax and
limited revenue.
The public meeting is scheduled for Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. at
McIntosh Town Hall.
