Baldwin Sheriff Remembers 9/11

Eight years ago, Baldwin County Sheriff Hoss Mack, like the rest of the nation, watched live television news coverage of the September 11th attacks in disbelief.

"It was shock, then it was a lot of questions," says Mack.

Two days after the Twin Towers collapsed, Mack was in New York City, leading a team specializing in body identification and recovery at Ground Zero.
Mack, then Baldwin County's chief investigator, was a member of the National Disaster Mortuary Response Team.

"We'd look for identification, we'd look for personal property and then there were also some specific law enforcement components where we were looking for evidence," says Mack.

Mack says there are some positive things that have happened since 9/11.

"It was tragic, there was a lot of death, there was a lot of gore you had to deal with," says Mack. "We're a nation now that's better prepared, we're fighting the terrorists now, there hasn't been an attack on American soil since then. We remember those that died, we still mourn their deaths, but we try to remember the positive things about that event as well."
