Parts of Highway 98 in Daphne look like a ghost town! Hungry drivers getting off the first exit in Baldwin County are finding boarded up restaurants, closed signs, weed-choked parking lots and missing drive-thru menus. Many of their favorite fast-food restaurants and local eateries have gone out of business, creating growling stomachs and a lot of concern.
"I know what it takes to run a business and it's a big concern," says Daphne Mayor Fred Small. Small says the recession has forced many restaurants owners to close shop. Small says families on a tight budget simply don't have extra money to go out to eat.
"If you had a two income family and one of the partners got laid off, it'd definitely affect your family," says Small.
Daphne restaurants that have recently closed:
-Krystal
-Checkers
-Roly Poly
-Russo's
-Frosty Dog
Until the economy rebounds, empty restaurants...and empty stomachs could continue to be a problem along the Eastern Shore.
